You might enjoy reading if you like to read about life in Canada, sports, travel, brain issues, books, randomness or the environment. To make things interesting*, I had an aneurysm and intensive brain surgery at 32. If you can relate at all, or are curious about thoughts from a damaged brain, read on. *If that's not the reason, then I am still searching for it.

Layout Callahan
Once again, I'm off to bed with no blogs about Nationals. Tonight I fed my sisters cats, then moved on to West Coast Trail meal prep. Thus, I'll cut to the chase. One highlight of my Nationals: I got a layout Callahan against Stella in pool play! I'm still stoked about it :)

We got third at Nationals. 1rst was Stella (Ottawa), and second was Storm (Montreal). I have tonnes to blog about it, but I'm too tired right now. More soon.

Habitat for Humanity
On Thursday, I "volunteered" with my company for Habitat for Humanity. The quotation marks aren't to imply that I was voluntold. Instead, it was the best of both worlds: Habitat got my company's labour for the day, and I still got paid. Genius.
The project was in Mayland Heights, just off of 16th Ave and Deerfoot. We were framing a roof! It was a lot of fun and hard work. Thursday was a really hot day, hitting over 30 for most of the day. I think I swung a hammer more in one day than I have in the last 5 years.

Light Switch Game
Tartan and I play the Light Switch Game nearly every night. I go to turn out the light when I go to bed, and Tartan wait for me to launch himself. These pictures should make it clear how the game worked. Don't miss the tiny face in the bottom of the second picture. Sometimes Tartan gets impatient, if I am taking too long in the bathroom. He will meow for me to hurray up!
Sports
Between Worlds and the Olympics, I have been watching a lot of sports! When I say 'watching' I mean both watching on TV, and hitting refresh on my browser hundreds of time a day. The Olympics haven't started, you say? Soccer started before the opening ceremonies. How weird is that. Finals for Worlds are tomorrow. Go Canada!

Harry Potter und der Stein Weisen
I'm sure I've mentioned this before - I'm reading Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen (German edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)
1 in German. Well, now I've been reading it for a lot longer. It's really slow going, because I translate with the English book either line by line or paragraph by paragraph. I've made it to Chapter 5, page 49 in the English Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone
and page 70 in the German book. At first, I was really surprised just how hard it was to read. I remember the first time I read the book (in English) it took maybe a day, and I've heard of people doing it a lot faster. I've been reading this one for a couple of months (admittedly off and on with a novel and books on the West Coast Trail). I think the first 10 pages took me a week. I feel like I'm making some real progress. I'm understanding more and more of the German, which makes the storey flow a lot more. Don't get me wrong, it's still very slow. Sometime I won't understand any words in a whole section, but most of the time I'm getting at least a few words. I'm even getting some sentences right. I usually try to read the German first and then the English, but sometimes I get tired and do it the other way around - much easier.
I'm also really enjoying the story. I remember almost scanning parts of the story the first time I read it, to advance the plot faster. The first one really is a kids book, so not that much happens. Because I'm forced to slow down, I'm appreciating both the story and details that I might not otherwise have noticed. I don't have anything specific. I think I've seen the movies enough that I've skipped a lot of the details of the book in my memory. The books are so rich with detail compared with the movies (don't get me wrong, still love the movies too).
Chapter 6, here I come.
Unrelated: I was going to do a write up of Saskatoon, but if you'd like to hear about that, read the Sills post on it at http://www.thesills.net/. Oh, and the hotel had a water slide. Funsies.

Who Needs a Thyroid?
Not me? I haven't got one, and it's best that I have none. For me, thryroid tissue = cancer cells, or it could.
About a month ago I got a letter from my endocrinologist to come in for an appointment. This wouldn't be strange at all, expect the last time I saw my endocrinologist, he said come back in one or two year. Oh, and we had a super awkward 'pregnancy talk'. Anyway, the appointment was just after I did blood work (which I do every 3 months, mostly to check my Synthroid, or synthetic thyroid hormone), so obviously something was up. Nothing too major, or at least as of yet. My blood work showed indication of thyroid tissue (by presence of hormone, although I don't remember which one), so now I have to do a full body scan. I've done three in the past - two with Thyrogen, one without. Thyrogen is a very expensive (about $1800) drug that simulates thyroid stimulating hormone, which means I don't have to build it up naturally. To build it up naturally, I have to go off my Synthroid, and I start feeling like shit after about 3 days. I had to do one scan this way. to do the scan, I have to go off for a month, which translates to 2 months of sick. I'm so stoked that I don't have to do that again! Go Thyrogen. It's very expensive because it's new. I was approved about 2 years after I was diagnosed.
Anyway, enough blither: I need to go get scanned again, just a quick $1800 of someone else's money, two stabs in the ass, and an hour long nap in a machine, and we'll see.
Off to Saskatoon with Bronco this weekend! More pictures of 24 hrs to follow.
